We are pleased to announce our new partnership with Thanda, a vibrant and innovative organization located in rural KwaZulu Natal. As a community-based organization, Thanda has four core programs: Imbewu Early Childhood Development; Siyazazi After-School Programming; Nisela Organic Farming; and Creative Learning Training. To provide ” innovative solutions for sustainable development”, Thanda trains and employs youth from the community as Early Childhood, After-School, and Farming Facilitators.
In South Africa, 80% of children have reading deficits. The numbers are even higher in rural areas, where access to schools and libraries are limited or non-existent. Thanda recognized and addressed this critical issue through its Library Programme. which loaned 9,145 books 2019. South Coast Foundation contributed to Thanda’s Mobile Library Programme to reach rural youth that who live too far to visit Thanda’s library.
In addition to the Mobile Library Programme, we were introduced to another very impressive program, Thanda’s Chess Club. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Nduduzo aka Mr. Chess, the children not only learn to play chess and compete tournaments, they win them! Last year their team, competed against ten teams, including the Police Team, to take home the trophy. Now the Police Team are eager to be mentored by Mr. Chess. Congratulations!
